The Tachyon to Freespace2 Full Conversion Mod

New Patches Available

Greetings Space Scallywags.

As we bring 2014 to a close, we were made aware that Novalogic got their lobby
back online. As such we’ve rererere-released a server IP patch so everyone can
play again.

We also updated the No Environment Effects mod, which was in need of some fixing
for a while as well. Note that if you’re using Win XP, the default install location
used by this patch is now set for 64 bit Vista and later. You’ll need to pick the
location yourself when it gives you that option if you still run XP.

Win Vista/7/8 – C:\Program Files (x86)\NovaLogic\Tachyon
Win XP – C:\Program Files\NovaLogic\Tachyon

As a smaller update, the bandwidth on the FringeSpace game server was probably
adequate before, but it has been increased 5x now. So there shouldn’t be a problem
on our end.

We hope to have some more good news for you after the new year.

    Hello there.

    For years i have played tachyon the fringe, im a big fan of your work. Thanks to you and your friends. i was able to create my very own mod for tachyon, one with i created the best and most powerful starship available for me, the star patrol enforcer. i made very helpful modifications on it and make him literally unstoppable. Besides i found a way to unlock the entire galactic map, so i dont have to explore all a region to unlock the map, very useful to me, and saves you a lot of time.

    Now, i ask you a favor, there is something i wasnt able to do and i wod greatly appreciate if you help with.

    Could you teach me or find a way to make the Megagate selectable in the ship maps?

    In Neptune there is a Megagate that can be selected, but thats the only one in the entire game, for me it would be awesome if i could travel to regions in free run to the game, instead of autopilotting from base to base, even if i have to put the “say ahh” cheat on them.

    Thanks for your hard work on this legendary game.

      The problem is that the megagates were never intended to let you go back to sol or the other parts of the game.
      The one gate in Neptune is there for the cutscene/mission, and it’s more of a bug that lets you open it. Which if you
      do fly through, it dumps you in a blank map with no way to return, because there’s no map set as the exit point.
      Simply put, the megagates are fake placeholders, props used for the cutscenes.

      Custom maps have been made for multiplayer where you can fly through nearly all of the single player maps in one
      giant linking system. How that was likely made (I don’t have that “pack”) is using the map tool to take every SP
      map and every gate in those maps, and point the gate at the proper map file it should dump you on. Gates are like
      portals, you point them at the destination map and the game knows to send you there and loads it on your system as
      long as a matching file name exists. Your spawn on the destination map is seemingly random pick of about 5 spawn
      locations.

      Now megagates are something you can place on a custom map, but I don’t remember if they can have their exit points
      edited. The other problem is that I don’t think you can open one without the Say Ahh, which doesn’t work in multiplayer.
      So the only thing you could do is edit the SP map the Neptune gate is on, to take you back to SOL, and hope you can get
      back to the fringe. Maybe you could rewrite the destination gate from Hailey Station so it sends you back to the Hub.

      That’s my best guess.

        There’s one megagate that you can enter without being taken to the blank map, it is located at the bora region and it happens to be open in the mission you have to ambush the galspan frigate Orpheus, but to open the megagate you must complete every mission from the bora region available before this one. To enter the megagate you must use the ragtag cheat to obtain the pegasus, since it is the fastest plane of the game and you don’t have much time to enter the portal, when you reach the mission designated sector use your afterburner until you reach max speed and then hold slide (Dont forget to turn off the generators for max speed), when you are nearing the portal slow your ship to 1100< because if you dont do so you will likely "pierce" through the portal and won't be taken to the megagate destination, but if you succeed your ship will freeze for a while and then pass the portal, the cutscene of passing through a megagate is the same from entering a multiplayer match.

    Thanks for the quick answer.

    As for the megagates, i would like to shere with you some experience i had with modding the game, it might help you if you find something new.

    When i was modding the game to allow me to play with the SP Enforcer, i realize that the best way to do it was to replace one ship with another, i didnt want to give neither galspan or bora possesion of what was to be the ultimate starship that i was building. (imagin the pain it woud be to destroy them if you woud be in the opposite side XD)

    So, i chouse to replace the Mako starship with my Enforcer, (though it still a pain when you have to face them in the second arena qualifier DX). I use modified weapons and card slots from a modified TNS inquirer that i found on an already finished mod and i improved it by makin it compatible with the position of the lazers and missile launchers of the ship. I also make it have an infinite afterburner energy an an almost infinite lazer energy. Also i made every weapon and card slot support all types of weapons and cards.

    To finish it, i put a orion hud wiph a custom picture of an Enforcer that i found on another compleated mod i found (if i remember right, it was on base or arena mod here present).

    The final result,was a masterpice, created by only modificading the DES files of the Mako, the def_vars.cfg and the vars.cfg to make my moded ship as my main ship and to unlock the entire galactic map (as mentioned in the previous post) and edit my credits.

    Thouh, despite all my hard work, this mode still have some bugs that you shod know. Some are weard, some have unexplainable solutions, but there is one that is very annoying. Let start.

    Bug#1: In the Neptune mission when you get banished to the fringe, you MUST NEVER, and i say again, NEVER unse the Enforcer, use the Orion or any other ship. If you use the enforcer the game will crash.

    Bug#2: When you target another Enforcer or get to clode to one, it seems to engage some animation bug in your Enforcer, the legs of your ship began to move on there own by no reason, therefore, to avoid such anoing animation you must aviod eye contact with another Enforcer, never get to close to him and never target him (in cutcenes or in the arena that wold be inpossible DX).

    Bug#3: The first time you enter the Frontier Region it engages a cutcene as you know, for some reason i do not know when this cutcene begins the game crash for no reason, and it happens only on the Frontier cutcene, only there O_O. there are two ways of deling with this bug. The fist is to quickly skip the coucene by pressing the ESC button. The other way is that you enter the RAGTAG cheat on the game before you enter the frontier, i had no idea why, but it works for me O_O.

    The last bug is the most ANOING one, and i didnt manage to fix it at all.

    bug#4: LANDING PAD…. GOD DAMIT, evry time i enter a station in the end of evry mission the animation is perfect, but in a mission that requires that you land your ship on a landing pad of another ship or on a station…BANG the ship becomes some sort of a ghost and passes the landim pad flor and land hafe berried on it.

    To fix that, my only guess is that you have to edid either the PACK or the PAL files of the ship, and i have no idea what to do it. (please help me DX)

    There are other things that i would love to do in my mod like edit the amount of ammo of missiles such the swarm missiles to have 30 instead of 4, and the helios missiles to have 100 instead of only 2 (that would be pretty helpful while bombing the Hephaestus module XD)

    I would ask you to help me editing the animation problems of my precious SP Enforcer ship. If possible you could fix them and post them here.

    I would appreciate even more if you at least put here both shwarm and helios missile files with infinite ammo or the Deimos Heavy Lazer with the same rapid fire rate of the Pulsar lazer.

    I would be eternally grateful if you do me this favors. Thanks for time and patience.

      Bug#1 the game probably checks what you are playing as or it can’t render the cutscene correctly.
      there was an issue with my mod pack not long ago where players couldn’t get past being exiled as it
      would crash with mod ships. I had to mod in a default ship to give the player something to use, until they
      could restore the mod ships with ragtag.
      Bug#2 Enforcers have always had moving legs in SP, it’s broke in multi. animations don’t carry over, don’t know why.
      Bug#3 same as bug#1
      Bug#4 even the ships I setup in the mod packs have this problem as they were not
      designed or polished before the game shipped to have properly setup landing points/paths. This is
      most visible on the Nighthawk. There’s a field somewhere I think in the DES that can change it, but the
      range is too far between points. You end up hovering well above, or well inside the landing platforms.

      PAK and PAL files are not editable. PAK’s are model files. PALs are palette (color sets) data.
      Unless you can read Assembly code, there’s a lot of the game that can’t be edited, or we don’t have ways of fixing.

      The reason the Mako data works is that it’s a different faction. AGT, instead of Bora or Gal Span.
      AGT doesn’t have the same restrictions as the other factions.

      I will not teach you how to create infinite weapon hacks. I know how, I’ve created and used them as
      well as infinite energy/burners, god rails, and base wars cheats. It serves no purpose but to harass people
      online. The information doesn’t need to get out.

      With that said, be aware our server is setup with additional admin tools. If you are caught cheating, you
      will be given a warning and asked to disable your cheats when playing with others. If you do not obey this rule,
      you will be banned from the server and blocked.

      Hack away at single player, do what you want. But outside of the mods that have been released, don’t bring them
      to multiplayer. You can host your own server if you wish, but don’t expect anyone to stay if you’re going to fight
      them with that overpowered enforcer.

      You can use this old tool to edit maps, it’s not complete and something things don’t work, but it is the only thing

      SPX files are the maps. There is no way to change the events or scripting on a SP map. You can only edit objects basically.

    Sorry for the miscomprehension, I have never intended to cheat on MP, only on SP, as i said before only on the hephaestus bombing mission XD.

    My mood was designed only to work on SP, blocking all contact with MP, i only play tachyon on SP so dont worry about me at all.

    You wont find me anywhere,i only follow you an your work because im a big fan of this game. Besides, i can’t wait to see the SP Enforcer with the modern 3d graphics of yours.

    Still, you said that i could cheat in SP, well, i have no idea how to do the things i want to do such as increased ammo on missiles or fire rate on lasers. If you change your mind, well, i would be grateful.

    Then again, if you dont want to teach me thats ok, i just wanted to undo any misunderstanding. Thanks for all the years of hard work. Really.

      I’m not angry with you, just warning you about how cheats will be handled.

      The same method that makes cheats work in SP, generally works for MP. They cause more harm than good when misused. “Pandora’s box” so to speak.

      I’ve fought my share of kids who figured out how to mod, or used trainers in an Enforcer. Sure they are fast and have a lot of armor, but they have no skill at all. I’d rather see someone actually develop skill in the game and play it right. Mods can be fun, but they don’t create a good pilot.

      Unfortunately we don’t have a new enforcer model built yet. We hope to get FringeSpace more active after the new year.

    Quick question.

    Why when i deliver spare parts in the industrial sector, they dont come out of my inventory?

    That may sound as a good glitch (free money yay XD) , but for me, it’s very annoying. it only happens with spare parts item.

    I dont know how to fix this problem, do you?

      Unfortunately I do not. It’s probably part of the mission scripting, which we don’t
      have access to in order to edit.

        I know at some point I released all the files from tachyon that were encrypted in an unencrypted state.

          Which scripts are you referring to DC? The actual map files are only moderately editable, there’s several
          things that are not editable without some sort of custom tool that Novalogic had. Our current problem is not
          being able to play consistently at all without crashes due to the IP update making the exe unstable.

            Crashes of the CtD, space, and other varieties are much more common, particularly when
            trying to access the lobby or joining a server. Freezing on trying to join a server.
            Crashes during multiplayer, inability to rejoin games due to the above.
            The correct IP is the problem, it’s longer than the previous IPs (more complete octets),
            so I think the slight difference in hex is throwing it off. It works, but rarely.

    Has ever in any mission Arman Patrioli appeared for you? I keep looking for him but he never shows up.

    I dont know how get rid of the contraband i found in crates, i only know that he is the only one that trade them. Have you had any luck finding him?

      You go back to the mission screen after the mission is complete and it generally deducts
      it from your inventory, or you go to the inventory screen and sell the stuff outright.
      There’s some inventory that you have as leftovers you can just sell for money, it’s not needed
      for anything. Patroli you don’t interact with outside of cutscenes or mission select screens,
      his ship if I remember right is in New Vegas on the multiplayer maps and one of the fog maps.
      In game I think he only shows up on one side’s faction, like if you play GS. I don’t recall where
      exactly his ship shows up in the missions.

    Im looking for Arman on SP, he only shows up in the Frontier region on dark space sector.

    But he only really appears in the “Hunting the Hunter” mission in for Galspan side, but in that mission, i can’t sell anything to him.

    I land on his ship and nothing happens, it doesn’t unload my contraband cargo.

    It’s been said that it is random when he appears, but he never appeared to me.

    Im doing something wrong or there is something i should do for him to appear to me? Or is he on another place or mission? that is my doubt

      Actually i search also for the Opportunity Ship in Dark Space.
      I am close to the final mission, found all crates in the game and delivered them to the different places.
      Only the Spare Parts, i still have a mission in Hub available, and the Contraband is left.

      But in Dark Space, i do not find the Black Market ship from Arman Patrioli.
      Guilherme, do you have success in finding him there?
      I have only the Redship Rory Bounty mission and the last Arena Tier mission left in the Frontier, but in both missions, i can not find the Opportunity in the sector, even i max out my gamma in the settings.
      So it is too well hidden or it is simply not there.

      Any ideas? Maybe i should have visited it during an earlier mission? Even it have to be after the Twilight series of missions, because there is also a contraband crate in the Demon Pirates sector.

    I’m really sorry for insist, but i really like to know how to edit the amount of ammo of my Melios missile in SP. Having only 2 of them is extremely annoying for me.

    I swear in the name of god that i will NEVER EVER try to use it in MP. You may bane me if i dere to break this promise, but i swear i only play SP in tachyon. So please, at least give me a clue where i should look for the amount of ammo on the missile.

    Really sorry for bothering you.
